Anambra Teacher Sought in Manhunt After Allegedly Flogging Pupil to Death

A teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old pupil to death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, is now the subject of a statewide manhunt by the Anambra State Police Command. The tragic incident, which occurred on the evening of July 16, 2026, has triggered widespread outrage and prompted immediate police action under the Safe School Initiative. The victim, a student at the school, was rushed to a hospital after being severely injured, but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment. His body has since been deposited in the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the case was reported to the Neni Police Division on the same day. He stated that police operatives responded swiftly and collected evidence, including photographs that revealed visible marks of violence on various parts of the deceased’s body. These findings support the allegations that the boy was subjected to severe corporal punishment, leading to his death. The investigation is being led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Harrison Oruruo, who is overseeing operations under the Safe School Initiative.

The Anambra State Police Command has activated a special operations team to locate and apprehend the fleeing teacher suspected of the fatal assault. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice is served and have assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, diligent, and transparent. The Command also reiterated its ongoing efforts to protect schoolchildren across the state through the Safe School Initiative, which aims to prevent violence and abuse in educational institutions.

SP Ikenga urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. He provided the Command’s emergency line, 07039194332, for tips and reports. The incident has reignited national discussions on the use of corporal punishment in Nigerian schools and intensified calls for stricter regulations and enforcement to safeguard pupils. Many are demanding stronger oversight and accountability measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This case highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in school discipline practices and greater protection for children in educational settings. As the manhunt continues, the police remain focused on bringing the accused to justice while reinforcing their pledge to maintain safety in schools across Anambra State. The outcome of this investigation could set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in Nigeria’s education system.
