Nigerians Anthony Ikenwe and Kevin Nwamma Arrested for Multimillion-Pound Crypto Heist in UK

A gang of three men who impersonated police officers to defraud eight victims of over £4 million in cryptocurrency has been sentenced to prison following a major investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The fraudsters, identified as Mr Ikenwe, 29, Hamza Bashir, 23, and Mr Nwamma, 25, used fake police websites and deceptive tactics to trick victims into handing over their digital assets. They were convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering after a complex operation that uncovered their elaborate scam and lavish spending habits.

The criminals convinced victims that their cryptocurrency was at risk and urged them to transfer funds to what they believed were secure police accounts. In reality, the money was immediately stolen and laundered through a network of cryptocurrency wallets and financial channels. The Metropolitan Police’s Cryptocurrency Team used blockchain analysis, communications data, financial records, and internet service provider information to trace the stolen funds and identify the perpetrators.

Detective Inspector Geoff Donoghue described the gang as “highly organised” and “calculated manipulators” who exploited people’s trust in law enforcement. He emphasized that the force’s ability to trace and seize digital assets demonstrates how policing is adapting to technological crime. “We have the capabilities to trace and seize high-value assets, and we will do everything in our power to identify those responsible,” he said.

The investigation began in January 2025 after victims reported the fraud. Officers quickly linked multiple cases through common aliases, phone numbers, websites, and spending patterns, revealing a coordinated criminal network. On November 20, 2024, coordinated raids were carried out at seven locations across London and Essex, leading to the arrest of all three suspects. Police seized 40 mobile phones, luxury goods, and cryptocurrency assets during the operation.

Mr Ikenwe and Mr Nwamma pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to defraud and money laundering, including four counts of converting criminal property. Bashir initially denied involvement but changed his plea to guilty during the trial after being presented with overwhelming evidence. All three were sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday.

Mr Ikenwe and Mr Nwamma each received six years for fraud and five years for money laundering to run concurrently. Bashir was sentenced to three years and nine months for fraud and three years for money laundering, also to run concurrently. Investigators found that the gang spent stolen funds on luxury cars, designer clothing, and international holidays to destinations like Thailand, Japan, Paris, and the Maldives.

Financial records showed cryptocurrency was regularly converted into payment cards, and the trio made frequent purchases at high-end stores such as Harrods, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton. Luxury items seized during searches were valued at over £26,000. Officers also discovered approximately £1 million in cryptocurrency directly linked to Mr Ikenwe and nearly £500,000 in cash held in a Dubai safe deposit box.

The case highlights the growing threat of crypto-related fraud and the importance of public awareness. As technology evolves, so too must law enforcement’s ability to combat digital crime, ensuring justice for victims and deterring future offenders.
