Fear Grips Benue Communities as Armed Herdsmen Influx Sparks Security Concerns

Fear has gripped communities in Tombo, Mbagber, and Ukemberegya/Tswarev council wards of Logo Local Government Area in Benue State following a reported influx of armed herdsmen. Residents say the herders, accompanied by large herds of cattle, have been moving into rural settlements since January, sparking widespread anxiety over potential violence. Reports indicate that the herdsmen have already attacked farmers, raped women, and destroyed farmlands as they graze their cattle in sensitive areas. The situation has intensified as another group of armed herders is believed to have crossed the River Benue through Shaoo, Basham, and Akor, located west of Anyibe settlement.

Local sources claim the herders are positioning themselves strategically, raising fears of imminent attacks on Ayilamo, Anyiin, and Iorza towns. Community leaders and residents alike are sounding the alarm, citing past tragedies that have left hundreds dead. Joseph Anawah, a community leader and resident of Ayilamo, confirmed the influx, stating, “There is an influx of herdsmen and their cows into several communities in Logo since January. The herders came with thousands of their cows; so, this has heightened tension in the council.” He emphasized that the presence of such large herds is not only disruptive but dangerous.

Mark Iorundu, another resident, said most villages in the council have been taken over by the herdsmen and their cattle. Buga Audu added that the situation is terrifying, with some families already relocating to safer areas. “With the movement of large herds of cattle in our community, we are afraid because it portends danger. We recall the incidents of the past years, especially how hundreds of people were murdered,” Audu said, highlighting the trauma still fresh in the minds of locals.

Residents are calling on security operatives to be more vigilant and responsive to the growing threat. They demand immediate intervention to protect lives and property, especially as the herders’ movements continue to expand. The gravity of the situation has prompted urgent appeals for government and security agencies to investigate, deploy forces, and prevent further escalation. Despite repeated attempts, the executive chairman of Logo LGA did not respond to calls seeking confirmation of the reports. Similarly, DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

The continued presence of armed herdsmen in Logo LGA underscores the persistent insecurity challenges facing parts of Benue State. Without swift and decisive action, the risk of renewed violence remains high, threatening peace and livelihoods in the region. The situation demands coordinated efforts from security agencies, local leaders, and state authorities to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents.
