James Chimin, the State Assistant Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State, has officially resigned from the party and announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his appointment as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Agbu Kefas. The move, made public on Saturday in Jalingo, marks a significant political shift in Taraba State as Chimin aligns himself with the ruling party and Governor Kefas’ administration. He cited his commitment to supporting the development of Taraba State as the primary reason for his decision.
Chimin addressed journalists in Jalingo, stating that his transition to the APC was driven by a desire to contribute to the progress and prosperity of the state under Governor Kefas’ leadership. He emphasized that his appointment as SSA reflects the governor’s inclusive approach to governance and his commitment to giving opportunities to all ethnic groups within the state. “Our people are indeed happy and grateful to Governor Agbu Kefas, who has demonstrated uncommon love for the Tiv people by considering them for appointments into his administration,” Chimin said.
In his statement, Chimin declared his full support for President Bola Tinubu, Governor Agbu Kefas, and other APC candidates from Taraba South who are vying for elective positions in the upcoming general elections. He pledged his “unalloyed loyalty” to the APC and Governor Kefas, signaling a complete break from his previous political affiliation. This shift is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the APC’s presence in Taraba South, a region known for its political influence and voter base.
Chimin’s resignation from the PDP and subsequent joining of the APC comes at a critical time ahead of the 2023 general elections, as political parties intensify their campaign efforts across Nigeria. His move could influence voter dynamics in Taraba South, where party loyalty often plays a crucial role in electoral outcomes. The appointment as SSA also underscores Governor Kefas’ efforts to build a broad-based administration that reflects the diversity of Taraba State.
The defection of a high-ranking PDP official to the APC highlights the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where appointments and development agendas often sway party allegiances. Chimin’s decision may encourage other PDP members to reconsider their positions, especially if they perceive greater opportunities for service and development under the APC-led government. His public declaration has already sparked discussions among political observers and party members across the state.
As the election season approaches, Chimin’s shift adds another layer to the political landscape in Taraba State. His support for the APC and Governor Kefas’ administration is expected to bolster the party’s campaign efforts, particularly in areas with strong Tiv presence. The move underscores the growing influence of governance and development in shaping political loyalties across Nigeria.
