A fresh leadership crisis has erupted in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State, as a faction within the party has formally petitioned the Kano State Police Command to investigate what it calls unlawful actions by Hajiya Najaatu Muhammed, claiming her moves threaten party stability and public order. The petition, submitted on July 8 by the Kano State Transition Committee under the leadership of Hon. Musa Shu’aibu Ungogo, accuses Najaatu of attempting to split the party by unilaterally dissolving the state executive committee and appointing a caretaker committee headed by Alhaji Umar Bala. The faction insists that such actions violate the party’s constitution and were not authorized by the National Executive Committee (NEC) or the National Working Committee (NWC), which alone hold the authority to establish caretaker committees.
Najaatu, who identifies herself as the ADC Deputy National Chairman (North-West), announced the dissolution of the Kano State executive committee on Monday, asserting that the caretaker committee was necessary to restore order and ensure smooth party operations. However, the existing leadership, represented by Ungogo and Administrative Secretary Dr. Bala M. I. Takai, rejects this move as illegitimate and unconstitutional. They argue that the position of Deputy National Chairman (North-West) was abolished during the party’s April 2026 national convention, rendering Najaatu’s claim to the role invalid. The petition states clearly: “The power to constitute Caretaker Committees rests exclusively with the National Executive Committee (NEC) or the National Working Committee (NWC) via proper directives. No individual official possesses such authority.”
The Kano faction further alleges that Najaatu, supported by a small group of inexperienced associates, is engaging in anti-party activities designed to create division and confusion within the ADC. They warn that if left unchecked, her actions could lead to tension among party members and supporters, potentially escalating into broader unrest. The petition urges the police to conduct a thorough investigation and take necessary measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the Kano State Police Command had not issued any public response to the petition as of the time of reporting.
The dispute has intensified the existing leadership crisis within the ADC in Kano, with both sides now claiming to represent the legitimate leadership of the party. While Najaatu’s camp insists the caretaker committee was formed to bring stability, the current state executive maintains its position as the duly elected and constitutionally recognized leadership. This internal conflict comes at a critical time for the party, as it prepares for upcoming political engagements and elections. The outcome of this leadership tussle could have significant implications for the ADC’s unity and effectiveness in Kano State and beyond.
