Four Feared Dead as Bandits Attack Villages and Hospital in Niger

Four civilians have been killed and several houses destroyed in a violent attack by bandits on two villages and a hospital in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, amid escalating communal clashes between Fulani and Kamuku groups. The attacks, which occurred on July 4, have triggered heightened security measures and a 12-hour curfew in the region. Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating that the violence followed recent hostilities between the two communities.

Troops from the 45 Battalion, stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Kagara, launched a fighting patrol to Baka Cin Hatsi and nearby villages after receiving intelligence about the ongoing violence. During their operation, the military confirmed that bandits had invaded Anguwan Gizo and Anguwan Karaya, where they carried out killings and set multiple homes on fire. The attacks were particularly brutal, leaving families displaced and properties reduced to ashes.

In a further escalation, the assailants raided Asmau Hospital, a place where displaced Fulani residents had sought safety from the conflict. The hospital’s role as a shelter for vulnerable people made the attack even more alarming, highlighting the targeting of civilian infrastructure. The security expert emphasized that the military has since taken control of the affected communities to prevent further bloodshed and to restore order.

To prevent retaliatory attacks and maintain peace, the Rafi Local Government authorities have imposed a curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. daily. Security forces are maintaining a visible presence across the area to deter further violence and reassure residents. Zagazola Makama also stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

The incident underscores the fragile security situation in Niger State, where ethnic and communal tensions have led to recurring violence. Despite military interventions, the region continues to face challenges in ensuring lasting peace. The recent killings and destruction of property have left communities traumatized and in need of urgent humanitarian support.

As security forces continue their operations, residents remain on edge, hoping for swift justice and long-term solutions to prevent future outbreaks of violence. The situation in Rafi LGA is being closely monitored by state and federal authorities, with calls for dialogue and reconciliation between the affected groups growing louder.
