Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have neutralised a suspected bandit following a violent clash during a security clearance operation in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred on June 26, around 7:00 a.m., after credible intelligence reported the presence of armed livestock rustlers near the Gero high grounds. Security forces responded swiftly to intercept a herd of cattle allegedly grazing on cultivated farmland, a common trigger for conflict in the region.
Zagazola Makama, a seasoned counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, disclosed the details in a post on X. He confirmed that shortly after the interception, the troops came under sporadic gunfire from suspected militia members. In response, the security personnel held their position and immediately requested reinforcements to ensure operational safety and effectiveness.
Additional troops from Sector 3 at Rafin Bauna, along with forces led by the Commander of Sector 6, quickly mobilised to the scene. The reinforcements engaged the attackers in a brief but intense firefight, which resulted in the neutralisation of one suspected bandit. The remaining suspects fled the area, leaving behind critical evidence including two mobile phones and the sum of N14,000, which were recovered during a subsequent search of the location.
The intercepted cattle were moved to a secure location for further investigation and necessary legal action. This operation reflects the ongoing efforts by OPEP to maintain security and protect communities in Plateau State, particularly in areas prone to cattle rustling and armed banditry. The security forces have continued with clearance operations and domination patrols across the region to prevent further attacks and limit the mobility of criminal elements.
This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by armed herdsmen and bandits in the North Central region, despite increased military presence and intelligence-driven operations. The neutralisation of the suspect and recovery of evidence demonstrate the effectiveness of coordinated responses by OPEP units. Authorities remain vigilant as they work to restore lasting peace and protect both agricultural livelihoods and human lives in the area.
The security situation in Plateau State continues to be a focus for national attention, with OPEP playing a key role in curbing insecurity. As operations intensify, communities are encouraged to remain alert and report suspicious activities to security agencies. The continued success of such operations will be crucial in ensuring long-term stability and development in the region.
