The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State is facing a deepening leadership crisis as two rival candidates for the 2027 governorship election have each received Certificates of Return from opposing factions of the party. The development, which occurred on Wednesday, underscores the growing internal divisions within the PDP, with both camps claiming legitimacy and control over the party’s structure. Chief Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, was declared the governorship candidate by the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He received his Certificate of Return at the PDP National Secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, accompanied by his running mate, Dr Oyije Ochaekiti Ogbenjuwa, and several prominent party leaders from Benue State.
In a parallel move, the rival faction led by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), presented a Certificate of Return to Dr Emmanuel Agbo, Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, after declaring him the winner of their own primary election. While Aondoakaa’s certificate presentation took place at the official party headquarters in Abuja, the location of the Turaki-led faction’s ceremony remains unverified as of the time of reporting. This dual certification marks a significant escalation in the ongoing power struggle within the PDP, as both factions now assert their authority and legitimacy.
Aondoakaa, speaking after receiving his certificate, expressed gratitude to the party leadership and members for the trust placed in him. He pledged to unite the PDP and lead it to victory in the 2027 governorship election, emphasizing his commitment to restoring the party’s credibility and strength. His statement, however, does not resolve the competing claims from the Turaki-led faction, which also insists on its procedural validity and legitimacy. The situation has created a confusing political landscape, with two candidates now officially holding party credentials for the same office.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to publish the final list of candidates for the 2027 Benue State governorship election, leaving the outcome of this internal battle hanging in the balance. The commission will likely have to address the conflicting nominations and determine which candidate, if any, meets the legal and procedural requirements for inclusion on the ballot. The crisis not only affects Benue State politics but also reflects broader challenges within the PDP, including leadership disputes and factionalism that have plagued the party in recent years.
As the 2027 election draws closer, the PDP’s internal conflict may influence voter perception and party unity. The eventual resolution of this dispute will be critical in determining whether the party can present a cohesive front or remain fractured. The political future of Benue State now hinges on how INEC and the party’s leadership manage this complex situation.
