Six dead as tankers, trucks, cars collide on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

Six people have died in a devastating multiple-vehicle crash at the Ibadan Toll Gate on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, according to the Oyo State Fire Service. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, involved tankers, articulated trucks, and passenger cars, and triggered a massive fire that caused severe traffic congestion lasting into Saturday. Eight other survivors were rescued from the wreckage and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for medical treatment. The crash has raised urgent concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance along one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.

The Oyo State Fire Service Chairman, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the tragedy in a statement released on Saturday. He revealed that the agency received a distress call at 9:29 p.m. from a police officer, Sola Rotimi, which prompted an immediate emergency response. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered six vehicles involved in the collision, including gas tankers, heavy-duty trucks, and two passenger cars. Parts of the scene were already engulfed in flames, making the rescue and firefighting operations extremely challenging.

Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby vehicles and properties. Akinwande noted that their efforts successfully limited further damage, but the human toll remains tragic. Preliminary investigations point to brake failure as a likely cause of the crash, underscoring the need for regular vehicle inspections and maintenance. He urged all motorists to exercise caution on highways and ensure their vehicles are equipped with functional fire extinguishers to manage emergencies before they escalate.

Social media footage captured the aftermath of the crash, showing burnt-out tankers blocking a major section of the expressway. Charred vehicle remains and debris littered the road, contributing to a massive traffic jam that stranded commuters for hours. The situation caused widespread frustration, especially among those traveling between Lagos and Ibadan, two of Nigeria’s most populous cities.

Comedian Bayegun Oluwatoyin, popularly known as Woli Arole, was among those caught in the gridlock. In a video shared on Facebook, he expressed his dismay, stating that motorists had been stuck for three to four hours. He suggested that an earlier vehicle fire may have worsened the traffic conditions and called for urgent intervention from road safety authorities. The video showed a long stretch of stationary vehicles, including trucks and cars, stretching far into the distance along the expressway.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review safety protocols and vehicle inspection standards on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by poor road safety practices and the urgent need for systemic improvements to prevent future losses.
