The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has firmly rejected claims that its governorship candidate, Ambassador Isaac Adebayo Alade, has withdrawn from the upcoming Ekiti State gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, 20th June 2026. In a statement issued on Friday, SDP National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba dismissed the reports as false and politically motivated. The party emphasized that Alade remains a validly nominated candidate recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and is fully committed to contesting the election.
The denial comes amid growing speculation and unverified reports circulating online and in some media outlets that Alade had stepped out of the race. SDP attributes these claims to a faction loyal to its expelled former chairman, Shehu Gabam, whom the party says is attempting to create confusion and distract voters. The party leadership, led by National Chairman Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, insists that Alade’s name is officially on the ballot and that he is one of the candidates who signed the INEC Peace Pact, a key requirement for participation in the election.
SDP reiterated its commitment to democratic processes and urged the Ekiti electorate to disregard the fabricated news. The party stressed that all its structures remain intact and that it is actively preparing for the election. The statement also highlighted that INEC recently confirmed Prof. Gombe as the legitimate national chairman of the SDP on its official portal, further solidifying the party’s position and leadership.
INEC has confirmed that all preparations for the 20th June gubernatorial election are complete. The electoral body announced on Friday that polling stations are ready, materials have been distributed, and security arrangements are in place. This official confirmation underscores the credibility of the election and the legitimacy of all registered candidates, including Alade.
The SDP’s strong rebuttal signals its determination to defend its candidate and maintain its presence in the Ekiti political landscape. With the election just days away, the party is focused on mobilizing support and ensuring that voters are well-informed about the truth. The controversy, while short-lived, has highlighted the intense political dynamics in the state ahead of the vote.
As Ekiti State prepares for a decisive election, the SDP’s stance reaffirms its confidence in Alade’s candidacy and its readiness to contest fairly. The party remains optimistic that its candidate will secure the trust of the electorate and emerge victorious.
