Police Investigate Death of 13-Year-Old Boarding Student in Kano State

The Kano State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the death of 13-year-old JSS 2 student Maimuna Sani Salisu, following conflicting accounts about the circumstances surrounding her demise at St. Louis Secondary School in Kano. The investigation was triggered by a petition filed on June 17, 2026, by Nakudu Law Partners, legal representatives of Maimuna’s mother, Mrs. Nusaiba Rabiu Dan Sheriff. The petition demands a thorough probe into the incident, which occurred on June 13, 2026, when school authorities informed the family that Maimuna had fallen ill and was taken to the International Clinic in Kano for treatment.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Maimuna’s elder sister was told by medical staff that the student had already been pronounced dead. The girl was buried the following day according to Islamic rites. However, the family has raised serious concerns over the official explanation provided by the school. While school officials claim Maimuna suffered a fatal asthma attack after arriving late for prayers at the school mosque, the petition presents alternative testimonies suggesting she was subjected to corporal punishment by senior students. These testimonies allege she was flogged and forced to kneel for an extended period after refusing to sweep the classroom, which may have worsened her health condition.

In response, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation. A Special Investigation Panel has been established under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shehu Idris, who heads the Criminal Investigation Department. The panel includes officials from the Kano State Ministry of Justice to ensure legal oversight throughout the process.

The police have already begun collecting evidence, having invited and interviewed three teachers, three senior female students, and two female witnesses. Statements have been recorded, and medical, forensic, and other investigative procedures are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death and the events leading up to it. The command has emphasized that the investigation will be conducted without bias, and anyone found responsible will face the full force of the law.

The police have also assured the public that the findings and recommendations of the panel will be made public once the investigation is complete. They are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward, promising confidentiality for all who provide details. The command extended condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of Maimuna’s soul.

This case has sparked widespread concern among parents and educators across Kano, highlighting the need for improved student welfare policies and accountability in schools. The outcome of the investigation is expected to influence future actions on student safety and disciplinary practices in Nigerian educational institutions.
