Ipswich Town have released their retained and released list ahead of the 2026–2027 season, confirming the futures of five Nigerian players and Lagos-born Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene. The Premier League newcomers made key decisions on their squad structure following their promotion, with several academy talents departing while others were retained or signed permanently. The club’s moves reflect a strategic approach to building a competitive squad for their top-flight campaign.
Among those released is Abube Onuchukwu, a 20-year-old box-to-box midfielder who joined Ipswich Town from Aston Villa two years ago. Despite being a regular for the club’s development squad in the Premier League 2 and Premier League Cup, Onuchukwu never made a senior appearance for the Tractor Boys. In search of playing time, he was loaned to non-league clubs Chelmsford City, Billericay Town, and Wingate & Finchley during the previous season, but ultimately left the club without breaking into the first team.
Also departing are forwards Jackson Nsofor and Will Unadike. Nsofor spent part of last season on loan at Cambridge City, while Unadike gained valuable first-team experience with Lowestoft Town and Heybridge Swifts. Both players were part of Ipswich’s youth setup and contributed to the club’s development pathways, but their contracts were not extended for the upcoming season.
On the positive side, Ipswich Town have secured the permanent signing of Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom from Ajax Amsterdam. The striker joined on loan last season and made 31 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals. His consistent performances earned him a permanent deal, adding depth and experience to the squad’s attacking options.
Tudor Mendel-Idowu has also been retained, with Ipswich exercising the option to extend his contract. The young player’s future remains with the club as they continue to build around emerging talent. Meanwhile, Chiedozie Ogbene has returned to Ipswich Town after a season-long loan at Sheffield United, where he gained valuable experience in the Championship.
These decisions highlight Ipswich Town’s focus on blending youth development with experienced signings as they prepare for life in the Premier League. With key Nigerian players either leaving or staying, the club is shaping a squad that balances potential and proven quality. The upcoming season will be crucial in determining how these changes translate into on-field success.
