A devastating rainstorm in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State has claimed the lives of a 50-year-old woman and her four-year-old granddaughter, leaving a trail of destruction in Katsinawa Bara Village. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds struck the community, collapsing structures and causing widespread damage. The victims, identified as Aisha Sagir and Aisha Shuaibu, died as a result of the storm’s impact, prompting deep sorrow among residents and authorities.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued by its spokesman, SP Nafiu Ahmed. According to the statement, the downpour began around 10 am and led to the destruction of homes, livestock, and other property, with losses estimated in the millions of naira. The police described the event as a tragic weather-related disaster that has plunged the village into mourning and disrupted daily life for many families.
Officers from the Kirfi Divisional Police Headquarters were immediately deployed to the scene to assess the damage, provide assistance to affected residents, and maintain public order. The police also coordinated with local leaders and emergency responders to ensure swift aid delivery and to prevent further chaos in the aftermath of the storm.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu extended his condolences to the bereaved family and the wider community, expressing deep sympathy for those who lost loved ones or suffered property damage. He prayed for strength and comfort for the victims’ families and urged the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season. The commissioner emphasized the importance of precautionary measures, such as securing homes and avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding.
He also assured residents that the police command would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and local government authorities, to support relief efforts and improve disaster preparedness. The police are urging citizens to report emergencies promptly and to stay informed about weather warnings issued by meteorological agencies.
This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of rural communities in Nigeria to extreme weather events, especially during the rainy season. As climate patterns become more unpredictable, the need for improved early warning systems and disaster response mechanisms grows more urgent. Authorities are now focusing on long-term solutions to protect lives and property in high-risk areas like Kirfi LGA.
