Osun Police Launch Probe into Shootings, Intensify Manhunt for Suspects

Osun State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into recent shooting incidents that left several people injured in parts of the state, including Osogbo, Ede, and Ile-Ife. The police confirmed that the attacks, which sparked public concern, occurred amid escalating political tensions ahead of the 2023 governorship election. Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, directed the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), along with the Operations and Intelligence Departments, to conduct a thorough probe aimed at identifying, arresting, and prosecuting all individuals involved. The command emphasized that normalcy has been restored in the affected communities, and security measures have been strengthened to prevent further violence.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the police assured residents that injured victims were promptly evacuated to medical facilities and are responding positively to treatment. The statement also highlighted ongoing intelligence-led operations to track down the perpetrators and any sponsors behind the attacks. The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property across Osun State, urging the public to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding during this sensitive period. Citizens with information that could aid the investigation were encouraged to report to the nearest police station or contact emergency channels, with assurances of strict confidentiality.

The shooting incidents have drawn political attention, with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke condemning what he described as coordinated attacks by political thugs allegedly linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign of Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO. However, the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council rejected these claims, accusing supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Accord party of orchestrating attacks against APC members and campaign assets. The Accord, through a statement by its Osun State Chairman, Pastor Victor Babalola Akande, alleged that armed thugs connected to the APC campaign carried out shootings in Osogbo and Owode-Ede, resulting in casualties and injuries.

Despite the conflicting narratives, the police have maintained a neutral stance, focusing on fact-based investigations to determine the true perpetrators. Security agencies have increased patrols and surveillance in the affected areas, while intelligence units continue to gather evidence. The command warned against vigilantism and any actions that could threaten public peace and security in the state. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging all stakeholders to avoid inflammatory statements and allow law enforcement to carry out its duties without interference. The situation remains under close watch, with the police determined to bring those responsible to justice and restore lasting peace in Osun State.
