Police Foil Robbery Attack, Kill Three Suspected Criminals in Benue

Benue State Police Command has successfully disrupted a suspected armed robbery operation, killing three alleged bandits in a gunfight along the Vaase–Chito Road in Ukum Local Government Area on June 8. The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:48 a.m., followed intelligence reports of armed men attacking travelers and stealing their belongings on the route. Security operatives, including a patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gbeji Division and supported by Community Volunteer Guards, swiftly responded to the threat.

Upon approaching the area, the security team encountered the armed suspects who immediately opened fire, sparking a fierce gun battle. The combined forces retaliated with superior firepower, resulting in the neutralisation of three of the attackers. Reports indicate that some of the deceased were wearing military camouflage uniforms, raising concerns about possible attempts to impersonate security personnel.

Following the confrontation, several other members of the gang fled the scene on motorcycles. Security sources believe some of the escapees may have sustained gunshot injuries. During the operation, police recovered one AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of live ammunition, and a motorcycle used by the suspects. These items have been secured as exhibits for further investigation by the police.

The bodies of the deceased were later transported to the Gbeji Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The case has since been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a thorough probe into the incident and identify any other individuals involved. Authorities are also intensifying efforts to track down and apprehend the remaining fugitives.

This operation underscores the ongoing commitment of security agencies in Benue State to combat armed robbery, banditry, and other violent crimes that threaten public safety. The police have continued to deploy intelligence-driven operations across vulnerable areas to prevent similar attacks and restore confidence among residents and travelers. The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in the region, particularly along major transportation routes.

As investigations continue, security forces remain on high alert to ensure the safety of communities and disrupt criminal networks operating in the area. The successful intervention serves as a warning to would-be offenders and reinforces the government’s resolve to maintain law and order in Benue State.
