One Killed, Homes Destroyed in Suspected Militia Attack on Benue Community

A suspected militia attack on Mbasa community in Utange Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State, has resulted in the death of one resident and the destruction of several homes. The incident occurred on June 4, 2024, when armed attackers launched a surprise assault on the community, leaving residents in fear and panic. Security forces responded swiftly, but by the time they arrived, the assailants had already fled the scene.

Troops from Sector 1, working alongside operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, received a distress call at approximately 8:30 am and were deployed to Mbasa. Despite their rapid response, the attackers had already carried out their assault and escaped into the surrounding bush. Preliminary investigations confirmed that one person was killed during the attack, while multiple houses were set ablaze, causing significant property damage and displacing families.

Security personnel who conducted an assessment at the scene recovered two spent 7.62mm special ammunition cartridges, providing evidence that firearms were used in the assault. This discovery has raised concerns about the availability of military-grade weapons in the hands of non-state actors in the region. The body of the deceased was later released to family members, who carried out burial rites according to local customs.

Military authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. They also stated that additional security measures have been put in place to protect Mbasa and nearby communities. Reinforced patrols and increased surveillance are now active in the area to prevent further incidents and restore public confidence.

This attack is part of a growing pattern of insecurity in Katsina-Ala and other parts of Benue State, where communities have been increasingly targeted by armed groups and militia elements. Residents continue to live under the shadow of violence, with frequent reports of abductions, killings, and property destruction. The situation has heightened anxiety among locals, who are calling for more robust security interventions.

Despite repeated appeals for information, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report. The absence of official confirmation from the police has left some questions unanswered, but security agencies remain committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The incident underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts between federal and state security agencies to address the rising threat of militia attacks in the region. As investigations continue, residents of Mbasa and surrounding areas remain on high alert, hoping for lasting peace and protection.
