A 24-hour curfew has been imposed in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State following a surge in violent attacks by armed militia groups that have led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and mass displacement of residents. The curfew, announced by Mrs. Virginia Baba Bambur, chairperson of the local government, comes after a series of deadly assaults on communities including Wurkum, Didango, Mutum Daya Kodai, Gurum, and surrounding settlements. The attacks, which intensified on Thursday and Friday, have left several people dead and forced many families to flee their homes in fear for their safety.
The situation has escalated rapidly, with armed groups launching coordinated attacks that have undermined security in the region. Mrs. Bambur stated that the curfew is a necessary measure to prevent further violence and protect the remaining residents. She emphasized that the attacks have not only caused loss of life but also disrupted normal life, damaged homes and infrastructure, and created a climate of fear across the affected communities.
In a public statement, the LGA chairperson directed all security agencies— including the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)—to enforce the curfew strictly. She stressed that the government is committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the violence and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. The authorities are also working to restore normalcy and provide relief to displaced persons.
Mrs. Bambur urged residents to remain calm and avoid panic, assuring them that the government is taking decisive steps to restore peace and stability. She called on community leaders and traditional rulers to support the security efforts and encourage cooperation with law enforcement. The curfew is expected to remain in effect until the security situation improves significantly.
The imposition of the curfew highlights the growing security challenges in Taraba State, particularly in rural areas where armed militias have increasingly targeted villages. This development adds to the list of security concerns across the Northeast and North Central regions of Nigeria, where communities continue to face threats from various armed groups. As authorities step up their response, the focus remains on protecting lives, restoring order, and preventing further escalation in the region.
