A member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to Nigerian military forces in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, marking another significant development in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign. The insurgent, identified as Bakaka Bukar, handed himself over to troops of Operation Hadin Kai at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mairari around 6:00 p.m. on June 1. According to Zagazola Makama, a renowned counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, Bukar surrendered with one AK-47 rifle and expressed a firm desire to leave the insurgency behind and reintegrate into society.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Bukar had escaped from the Arinna Maimasalaci enclave, a known ISWAP stronghold believed to be under the command of terrorist leader Abu Salim. His surrender is seen as a direct result of the sustained military pressure and intensified operations by Nigerian forces across the North-East. Zagazola emphasized that the defection reflects the growing impact of coordinated air and ground offensives, which have disrupted terrorist networks and eroded their operational capacity.
Following a thorough screening and documentation process, the former insurgent was transported by military authorities to the Bulunkutu Rehabilitation Centre in Maiduguri. The facility is part of the Federal Government’s comprehensive deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programme designed to help former combatants reintegrate into civilian life. This programme has been instrumental in reducing the number of active insurgents and promoting long-term peace in conflict-affected areas.
Zagazola noted that while the security situation in the region remains calm, it is still unpredictable due to the presence of remaining insurgent cells. He commended the troops for maintaining high morale and operational effectiveness despite the challenges. The military’s continued efforts have not only weakened terrorist strongholds but also encouraged more fighters to abandon violence and seek a peaceful future.
The surrender of Bakaka Bukar underscores the broader success of Operation Hadin Kai in destabilizing ISWAP’s structure and influence. As the military intensifies its operations, more defections are expected, further weakening the insurgency. The government’s focus on both military action and rehabilitation continues to play a crucial role in restoring stability to the North-East. With ongoing efforts, there is growing hope for lasting peace and sustainable development in the region.
