21-Year-Old Nigerian-Irish Concert Promoter Qayyum Balogun Stabbed to Death in Dublin Brawl

A 21-year-old Nigerian-Irish gig promoter, Qayyum Balogun, has died after being fatally stabbed during a violent altercation near a nightclub in Dublin City centre early Monday morning. The incident occurred around Bewley’s Cafe, where Balogun had spent the night, and quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation between two groups. He was initially stabbed in the arm and attempted to flee, running through several streets including South Anne Street, Duke Lane Upper, Grafton Street, and Clarendon Street, but was pursued and attacked again multiple times by the opposing group.

Emergency responders provided first aid at the scene before rushing Balogun to St James’ Hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A young woman who was present during the incident was also injured in the stabbing, though her condition has not been disclosed. Authorities have launched a full murder investigation, with Gardaí reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Officials believe the suspect who delivered the fatal blows may have been captured on camera, and are urging anyone who was in the vicinity between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. to come forward with information.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Detectives have ruled out race as a factor but are investigating whether Balogun knew his killer or shared social connections with the suspect. The Irish Times reported that Balogun’s father, who lives outside Ireland, is planning to travel to the country following the tragic news. In an emotional interview with RTÉ Radio’s Drivetime, Balogun’s mother, Teslimot Balogun, described her son as “a very funny guy” who was “always friendly, very quiet, easy going.” His stepmother, Loveth Patrick, echoed these sentiments, calling him “one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet, gentle, calm,” and emphasized that he “didn’t look for trouble.” She urged authorities to deliver justice for Qayyum.

The Ireland Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, has been briefed on the case and expressed his condolences to the family through a spokesperson. The incident has sparked widespread grief and calls for justice within the Nigerian and Irish communities, particularly among those who knew Balogun as a rising figure in Dublin’s music and events scene. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on identifying and apprehending those responsible. This tragic event underscores the need for greater community safety and vigilance in urban spaces, especially during late-night hours.
