The Oyo State Fire Service has recovered two bodies from the Ariyo River in Ibadan after a vehicle plunged into the water, marking a tragic incident that occurred on Friday in the Ona Ara Local Government Area. The car, identified as a Toyota Avensis with an unknown registration number, lost control and crashed into the river, resulting in the deaths of two passengers. The recovery operation was carried out promptly by the fire service team, who responded to the scene and executed necessary rescue procedures to retrieve the victims.
Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. He detailed that upon arrival at the scene, the rescue team observed that the vehicle had veered off the road and become submerged in the river. The team immediately initiated rescue operations, following standard protocols, and successfully recovered two casualties from the submerged vehicle. The bodies were later handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and necessary legal processes.
The police officers who received the bodies were led by ASP Adesuwa Sesan from the Ogbere Target Police Station in Ibadan. According to the statement, the handover was conducted in accordance with established procedures to ensure proper documentation and handling of the remains. The incident has sparked concern among residents in the area, particularly due to the recurring issue of road accidents along that stretch of the highway.
While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, the fire service emphasized the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by poor road conditions and reckless driving in Nigeria. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially on rural and poorly maintained roads where accidents are more common.
The recovery of the bodies marks the end of a distressing event for the families of the victims and the local community. As investigations continue, the police are expected to release more details regarding the circumstances leading to the crash. The Oyo State Fire Service has reiterated its commitment to public safety and will continue to respond swiftly to emergencies across the state. This tragic event underscores the need for improved road infrastructure and heightened awareness to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
