Equity and Social Justice Inspired My Path to Becoming a Paediatric Surgeon in Canada

Nigerian-born Dr. Adebola Adeyemi, a paediatric surgeon and lecturer in Canada, has been named among the 100 most powerful women in Canada for 2025, a recognition that highlights her groundbreaking work in medicine, equity, and social justice. Born in Nigeria, she moved to Canada at age three with her family, seeking better opportunities amid challenging political conditions at home. The journey was not smooth — the family relocated to the United Kingdom and later Jamaica before returning to Canada when she was eight. Her parents faced significant immigration hurdles, and her father remained in Nigeria for years due to visa issues, leaving her mother to raise the children alone in a new country.

Growing up in a low-income neighbourhood in Canada, Dr. Adeyemi witnessed firsthand the struggles of poverty, systemic inequality, and the challenges faced by immigrants and Indigenous communities. Her mother worked multiple jobs while pursuing education, often communicating with her husband through letters and phone cards, as technology was limited in the early 1990s. Despite these hardships, her mother built a strong support network and ensured her children felt loved and valued. When her father finally reunited with the family during her teenage years, it marked a major emotional milestone, though adjusting to a new household dynamic was not easy.

Though medicine was not initially her career path — she once envisioned herself in law or poetry — her passion for science and social justice eventually led her to pursue medical studies. She majored in Biology and English, blending her love for science with her artistic side. Her experiences growing up in a marginalized community shaped her desire to make a tangible difference, and she found that medicine offered both the platform and the respect to do so. She eventually chose paediatric surgery after discovering her deep connection with children and her love for surgical work during her rotations.

As a paediatric surgeon, Dr. Adeyemi has treated children with complex congenital anomalies and built lasting relationships with families, often receiving updates and cards from patients who have grown into school-age children. Her work extends beyond the operating room — she lectures at university and conducts impactful research aimed at improving surgical care and equity in healthcare systems. She credits her success to her supportive husband, a highly respected lawyer, and their shared Christian faith, which grounds them in their mission.

Looking ahead, Dr. Adeyemi hopes to leave a legacy of removing barriers for immigrants in the health profession and advancing equitable healthcare globally. Her recognition as one of Canada’s most powerful women in 2025 is not just personal validation, but a reflection of her ongoing commitment to excellence, compassion, and justice in medicine.
