Police Arrest Suspect in N1.02bn PMS Theft, Recover N300m Assets in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a key suspect linked to the alleged theft of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at N1.02 billion, with recovered assets worth over N300 million, following a coordinated investigation into a major petroleum fraud case. The arrest, announced on Tuesday by Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani at the command headquarters in Ikeja, marks a significant breakthrough in the probe launched after MEA Energy filed a formal complaint alleging conspiracy and theft of petroleum products. The suspect, a 38-year-old man, was apprehended in Delta State after fleeing the region in an attempt to avoid detection. His capture came after 12 days of intensive surveillance, intelligence gathering, and technical operations conducted by police operatives.

Tijani revealed that the investigation was initiated immediately upon receiving the petition from MEA Energy, which accused two individuals of orchestrating the illegal diversion of PMS. The police deployed discreet methods, including surveillance and cross-state coordination, to track the suspect’s movements. The operation culminated in a successful interstate arrest, highlighting the command’s commitment to tackling economic crimes and protecting Nigeria’s critical energy sector. The suspect, during interrogation, confessed to his involvement in the alleged theft and provided critical information that led to the recovery of cash and properties believed to be proceeds from the crime.

The recovered assets, valued at over N300 million, include cash, vehicles, and other valuables linked to the suspect’s illicit activities. These items were seized during follow-up operations after his arrest. The commissioner emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are currently focused on apprehending the second suspect, who remains at large. He assured the public that the arrested suspect will be formally charged to court once all investigative procedures are completed. The police also stressed the importance of public cooperation in combating economic crimes, particularly those involving the theft and diversion of petroleum products.

This arrest underscores the increasing role of intelligence-led policing in tackling organized crime in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The case also highlights the vulnerability of petroleum supply chains and the need for stronger security measures across distribution networks. With the recovery of significant assets and the arrest of a principal suspect, the Lagos State Police Command has sent a strong message to criminals involved in the illegal diversion of PMS. The ongoing pursuit of the second suspect indicates that law enforcement remains determined to bring all perpetrators to justice. This development is expected to bolster confidence in the security of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and encourage further collaboration between private companies and law enforcement agencies.
