Police Rescue Abandoned Newborn, Arrest Motorcycle Thieves in Yobe State

The Yobe State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby girl, estimated to be one day old, after she was found abandoned in Kallalawa Village, Damaturu, and has also arrested two suspects accused of stealing motorcycles in different parts of the state. The infant, discovered by police operatives from A Division, Damaturu, was immediately taken to the Special Baby Care Unit at the General Hospital, Damaturu, where medical staff confirmed she was in stable condition. According to SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Public Relations Officer of the command, the child has been handed over to the Social Welfare Department for proper care and protection. Investigations are ongoing to identify the mother and determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

The police command also announced the arrest of two individuals suspected of motorcycle theft in Gulani and Jakusko Local Government Areas. One suspect was apprehended on May 25, 2026, while riding a motorcycle that had been reported stolen earlier that day by Alhaji Mamman, a 27-year-old resident of Kaliyari Fulani Settlement in Bursari LGA. The motorcycle was taken near a shop along Gwiokura Road at approximately 4:30 p.m. The suspect was intercepted by police operatives along Jakusko Road and later confessed during interrogation.

In another case, Mohammed Garba, a resident of Bursali Village in Gulani LGA, was arrested for allegedly snatching a red Boxer motorcycle valued at ₦400,000. The incident occurred on May 23, 2026, when Garba, posing as a passenger, deceitfully took the motorcycle from its rider during a journey from Maiduwa Village to Ngalda Town in Fika LGA. Following a distress call made on May 24 and with the support of local vigilantes, Garba was apprehended. The complainant positively identified him, and he confessed to the crime during questioning.

Both suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations into their cases are continuing. The police command has stated that the suspects will be charged in court as soon as the investigations are completed. The Yobe State Police Command continues to intensify its efforts to combat crime and ensure public safety across the state.
