Rotimi Amaechi, a presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has set a clear condition for accepting the outcome of the party’s ongoing presidential primary, stating he will question the process if it is not free and fair. The former Rivers State governor made the declaration after casting his vote at the primary election held in his ward, Ubima, within Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. His remarks come amid heightened scrutiny over the credibility of the party’s internal electoral process, as aspirants and supporters await the final results.
Amaechi expressed satisfaction with the turnout at his polling unit, describing it as “huge” and noting that the atmosphere was filled with celebration and dancing before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials arrived to oversee the voting. He emphasized that he participated in the process and left the venue after casting his ballot, underscoring his commitment to the party’s democratic procedures. He also highlighted his efforts to monitor the primary across different states, indicating a keen interest in ensuring consistency and transparency nationwide.
Speaking to journalists, Amaechi stressed that transparency is non-negotiable. He stated that if the primary process mirrors the openness observed in his village, he would accept the result without reservation. However, he warned that any deviation from fairness would prompt a strong response from him and other aspirants. “If the other person wins, I will work with him,” he said, affirming his willingness to support the party’s chosen candidate. But he added, “If the process is not free and fair, I would question it.”
His comments reflect growing concerns among political stakeholders about the integrity of party primaries, especially as Nigeria prepares for general elections. The ADC’s primary is seen as a critical step in shaping the party’s national campaign strategy and selecting a candidate who can compete effectively in the 2027 presidential election. Amaechi’s stance underscores the importance of credible internal elections in building public trust and maintaining party unity.
As the vote counting continues, all eyes remain on the ADC’s leadership to ensure a transparent and inclusive process. The outcome of this primary will not only determine the party’s presidential candidate but also set a precedent for future internal elections. Amaechi’s commitment to fairness sends a clear message that democratic principles must be upheld at every level of Nigerian politics.
