Troops Arrest Three Suspected Robbers in Borno State

Troops have arrested three suspected robbers in Gar Gwigwi village, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, following a robbery incident reported on May 21. The arrest was confirmed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post shared on X, citing information from reliable security sources. The operation was carried out by troops of the 162 Amphibious Battalion under Operation HADIN KAI, who responded swiftly after receiving intelligence around 6:00 p.m. that a robbery was taking place in the community.

The security sources indicated that the incident raised concerns about potential involvement of members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) attached to the battalion. This allegation prompted the military to take immediate action to investigate and apprehend those responsible. The troops moved into the village and successfully arrested three suspects, while others fled the scene and remain at large.

Among the items recovered from the suspects were five mobile phones, a nylon bag containing a substance identified as ice, a locally made charm, a necklace chain, a scarf, two wristwatches, a dagger, a Qur’an booklet, N1,070 in cash, and a dane gun. The recovery of these items, particularly the weapon, has drawn attention to the security situation in the area and the need for accountability among both military and civilian security personnel.

The dane gun was later traced to a member of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, who confirmed that it had been stolen from him the day before the robbery. After verification, the weapon was returned to its rightful owner. This development underscores the importance of proper weapon tracking and the risks posed by unaccounted firearms in conflict-affected regions.

The three suspects are currently in military custody and are expected to face investigation and possible prosecution for their alleged involvement in the robbery. The military has not yet disclosed whether any CJTF members will be implicated or investigated in connection with the incident. The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Operation HADIN KAI to combat criminal activities and restore security in vulnerable communities across Borno State.

As security forces continue to address crime and internal threats, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining peace in areas affected by insurgency and insecurity. The swift response by the 162 Amphibious Battalion demonstrates the military’s commitment to protecting civilians and upholding law and order in the region.
