Galatasaray Captain Praises Osimhen as One of the Best in the World for Defensive Work

Galatasaray captain Abdülkerim Bardakçı has praised Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen for his crucial defensive contributions, highlighting how the forward’s work rate and pressing have strengthened the team’s league-leading backline. As Galatasaray prepare for their final Super Lig match of the season, they sit atop the table with the best defensive record in the league, having conceded just 29 goals—three fewer than second-placed Goztepe. Osimhen, who scored 22 goals and provided 8 assists during the 2025–26 campaign, has proven to be more than just a goalscorer, playing a vital role in disrupting opponents’ build-up play and helping to relieve pressure on the defence.

Despite being a central striker, Osimhen is known for his relentless energy, constant pressing, and willingness to track back when needed. His physical presence and aerial dominance make him a formidable opponent in defensive transitions. Bardakçı stressed the importance of defending from the front, noting that modern football requires attackers to actively participate in regaining possession. “Defense starts from the forwards,” he said in quotes relayed by Ege de SonSoz. “Osimhen is one of the best in the world in this area.”

The Galatasaray skipper also pointed out how teammates Yunus and Gabi (Sara) support Osimhen in pressing, which further eases the burden on the backline. “Thanks to Osimhen’s pressure on the opponent, the ball often doesn’t come to us,” Bardakçı added, underscoring the forward’s impact on game control and defensive stability. Osimhen’s defensive stats from the season reflect his commitment—averaging 0.3 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, and 0.6 tackles per match. He also won possession in the final third once per game and recorded two ball recoveries on average, demonstrating his consistent influence high up the pitch.

These contributions have played a key role in Galatasaray’s defensive success, helping them secure the Super Lig title. Osimhen’s ability to press effectively and win back the ball in dangerous areas has made him an indispensable part of the team’s structure. His performance this season showcases how modern strikers are expected to contribute beyond scoring, and Osimhen has delivered in both attack and defence. As Galatasaray look ahead to future challenges, Osimhen’s dual threat continues to be a cornerstone of their success.
