Ex-NAF Chief Air Marshal Abubakar Resigns from Active Politics

Air Marshal Sadiq Baba Abubakar (Rtd), former Chief of Air Staff and 2023 APC governorship candidate in Bauchi State, has officially announced his exit from partisan politics, citing internal party crises and personal reasons. In a heartfelt video message shared widely on social media, the retired military officer expressed deep emotion as he explained his decision to step away from active political engagement. The announcement comes amid speculation that he might have contested again in the 2027 governorship election, especially after his recent links with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition in Bauchi State.

Abubakar, who retired from military service in 2021, entered politics with high hopes and public support, but his 2023 gubernatorial bid ended in defeat against incumbent Governor Senator Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In his message, delivered in Hausa, he acknowledged the pain of leaving politics, describing it as a difficult but necessary choice. He thanked his supporters for their unwavering loyalty and understanding throughout his political journey, emphasizing that their encouragement made the decision especially hard.

“I have decided to step away from politics for personal reasons,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. He apologized to his supporters for the disappointment and prayed for God’s blessings upon them. Abubakar stressed that his departure does not mark the end of his service to the people, as he will continue his humanitarian work through the Marshal Care Foundation. The foundation focuses on improving access to healthcare and education, particularly for underprivileged communities in Bauchi and beyond.

He reiterated his commitment to national development, praying for lasting peace, unity, and progress in Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole. The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among political associates and supporters across the state, with some expressing sadness while others commend his decision to prioritize service over power. Abubakar’s exit from politics may reshape the political landscape in Bauchi, especially as the 2027 elections approach. His focus on humanitarian work signals a shift from electoral politics to grassroots development, potentially influencing how future leaders engage with their communities.
