Nigerian Wins Prestigious Award and Fellowship in the United States

Nigerian scholar Taiwo Adebiyi has been awarded the prestigious 2025–2026 Andrea Prosperetti Research Computing Student Award, a recognition given annually to a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher for outstanding contributions in scientific computing, data science, and high-performance computing. The award was presented during the Spring Faculty and Staff Meeting of the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston, where Adebiyi is a doctoral candidate and research assistant at the Uncertainty Quantification Lab in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. His groundbreaking work on Transverse Section-roots, an innovative algorithmic and software framework for efficient and exact Gaussian Process Thompson Sampling in Bayesian optimisation, earned him this distinction.

In addition to the Prosperetti Award, Adebiyi has also been selected for the 2026–2027 SCIPE Chishiki AI in Civil Engineering Graduate Fellowship, administered by the University of Texas at Austin. This fellowship offers a $37,000 stipend, up to $12,000 in tuition support, travel assistance, computing resources, and mentorship through the Chishiki AI network. The recognition underscores his growing influence in the field of computational engineering and artificial intelligence applications in civil infrastructure.

Adebiyi’s research focuses on improving computational efficiency and accuracy in complex engineering problems, particularly in areas involving uncertainty and data-driven decision-making. His Transverse Section-roots framework is designed to enhance Bayesian optimisation, a method widely used in machine learning and scientific computing for finding optimal solutions with limited data. This work has potential applications in infrastructure design, environmental monitoring, and disaster risk assessment, areas critical to sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.

This summer, Adebiyi will further expand his expertise by joining Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico as an Advancing Machine Learning for Scientific Discovery Fellow. The 10-week internship will provide him with hands-on experience in cutting-edge machine learning research and collaboration with top scientists in the field. His journey reflects the increasing global recognition of Nigerian talent in science and technology.

The achievements of Taiwo Adebiyi highlight the growing presence of Nigerian scholars in international research circles. His success serves as an inspiration to young Nigerians pursuing careers in STEM fields and demonstrates the impact of diaspora contributions to global innovation. As he continues his academic and research journey, his work is expected to influence future advancements in engineering, artificial intelligence, and computational science.
