Hisbah Releases Two Women Arrested for Alleged Indecent Dressing in Kebbi

Kebbi State Hisbah Board has released two women detained for alleged indecent dressing in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi after counselling them on modesty and community standards. The incident, which sparked local concern, was resolved following a formal investigation and dialogue with the accused. The Director of the Board, Surajo Usman, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi, providing details of the case and the board’s actions.

The complaints against the women were received on Friday, May 8, from residents of Badariya who reported that the women were dressing inappropriately while staying in a house within the community. Residents further stated that the women were seen outside the house in attire deemed unsuitable by local standards, raising alarm among neighbours. The Hisbah Board responded swiftly, deploying officers to investigate the allegations and verify the claims.

Upon arrival, Hisbah officials conducted an investigation and arrested two women suspected of being involved in the incident. During interrogation, the women admitted to the allegations but clarified that their clothing choices were made for comfort due to the extreme heat. They emphasized that they had no malicious intent and were not trying to offend anyone. The women also expressed remorse for their actions and pledged not to repeat the behaviour.

Surajo Usman said the women were counselled on the importance of modesty, morality, and respect for religious and community values. He stressed that maintaining decent dressing is a key aspect of societal harmony and adherence to Islamic principles. After the counselling session, the women were released and advised to uphold acceptable conduct in the future. The board also encouraged the public to support efforts aimed at promoting good moral behaviour.

Usman urged community members to cooperate with authorities to maintain peace, discipline, and cultural integrity. He highlighted that the Hisbah Board remains committed to enforcing Islamic values while ensuring fair treatment and due process. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mutual respect and adherence to shared social norms in Kebbi State.

This case reflects ongoing efforts by local authorities to balance public morality with individual circumstances. As temperatures rise, such incidents may become more common, making community dialogue and education essential. The release of the women after counselling underscores a restorative approach, aiming to correct behaviour rather than impose punitive measures. The Hisbah Board’s actions highlight its role in promoting social harmony while respecting individual dignity.
