The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that several state governors, including those of Rivers, Kwara, and Ebonyi, were excused from the party’s screening exercise in Abuja due to official duties in their respective states. National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, made this disclosure on Saturday after the screening exercise held at the Plateau Governors Lodge in Abuja. He emphasized that the party respects the constitutional responsibilities of governors as chief executives and commanders of their states. Yilwatda assured that the screening process remains open and flexible for any governor who is available.
Yilwatda specifically named Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, and Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State as those who were temporarily excused. He explained that each of them had pressing official engagements that required their presence in their states. “Any governor who has issues to attend to, we understand,” Yilwatda said, highlighting the party’s willingness to accommodate the schedules of elected officials. He added that the screening committee is ready to conduct assessments at any time the governors are free.
The APC leadership reiterated that the screening process is not rigid and allows for flexibility. “Anytime you are free, call the screening committee. We will give you a room. You can come at your own will and convenience, and we will screen you,” Yilwatda stated. This approach underscores the party’s effort to balance party procedures with the practical realities of governance. The screening is part of the APC’s internal process to assess candidates for the 2027 general elections, ensuring that only qualified and committed individuals are positioned for leadership roles.
According to reports from DAILY POST, Governor Fubara of Rivers State is scheduled to undergo screening on Sunday at the same venue, the Plateau State Government Lodge in Abuja. This indicates that the party is actively working to complete the screening process for all relevant candidates. The exercise is being conducted in an orderly manner, with due consideration for the demands of public office. The APC’s screening committee continues to engage with state leaders, ensuring transparency and inclusivity in the selection process.
The party’s approach reflects its commitment to maintaining strong leadership structures ahead of the next electoral cycle. By allowing governors to participate at their convenience, the APC aims to foster unity and cooperation across its state chapters. This flexibility may also help reduce tensions and encourage broader participation in the party’s internal processes. As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the APC’s screening exercise remains a key step in shaping its future leadership and political strategy.
