LAWMA Arrests Three for Illegal Waste Dumping in Lagos

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested three individuals for illegal waste disposal during an overnight enforcement operation in the Ketu-Alapere area of Lagos State, as part of intensified efforts to combat environmental pollution. The operation, carried out between May 8 and May 9, 2026, targeted unauthorized dumping sites and led to the apprehension of suspects caught in the act. The development was confirmed by Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, in a statement shared via his verified X handle on Sunday.

The LAWMA Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team conducted the surveillance operation to address persistent cases of indiscriminate waste dumping across the state. The suspects were caught disposing of refuse at unapproved locations within the Ketu-Alapere axis, a known hotspot for environmental violations. Authorities emphasized that such actions contribute to public health risks and environmental degradation, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

During follow-up investigations, the suspects were traced to their residences to determine the root causes of their illegal activities. Findings revealed that the properties involved lacked adequate waste storage facilities and had not registered with approved Private Sector Participant operators responsible for waste collection. This non-compliance with state regulations was cited as a major factor in the enforcement action.

All affected properties have been documented and forwarded to LAWMA’s legal department for appropriate legal proceedings. The agency stressed that such measures are necessary to ensure accountability and deter future violations. Additionally, blackspots identified during the operation were cleared to restore cleanliness and improve environmental conditions in the area.

The commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for residents. He urged property owners and occupants to comply with waste management regulations and to engage licensed waste collection services. The enforcement operation reflects a broader strategy to reduce illegal dumping and promote responsible waste disposal practices across Lagos.

As LAWMA continues its surveillance and enforcement activities, residents are encouraged to report suspicious waste disposal activities. The agency remains vigilant in its mission to uphold environmental standards and protect public health. This latest crackdown signals a firm stance against environmental negligence and sets a precedent for future actions across the state.
