Nigeria Police Force operatives in Ondo State have successfully apprehended two suspects accused of participating in an interstate car theft ring, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against organized crime in the country. The suspects, identified as ThankGod Unchenna, 25, and Adewole Muyedeen, 53, were intercepted while transporting a stolen silver Hyundai vehicle from Lagos to Abuja. The arrest took place in Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area, following a swift response to intelligence reports.
The operation was made possible through the use of advanced intelligence-gathering and technology-driven surveillance methods, according to Abayomi Jimoh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command. On April 30, police received credible information that the stolen vehicle, previously reported missing in Lagos State, was being moved northward by suspected criminals. Acting on this lead, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit was immediately deployed to intercept the suspects.
During the operation, the principal suspect, ThankGod Unchenna, attempted to evade capture by jumping into the Ogbese River. Despite the dangerous terrain, police operatives demonstrated professionalism and tactical precision by pursuing him into the water and successfully apprehending him. He was brought out safely, while the second suspect, Adewole Muyedeen, was arrested without resistance.
Jimoh emphasized that the suspects are currently undergoing preliminary interrogation, which has revealed possible connections to a larger criminal network involved in vehicle theft and transportation across states. The police are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover all individuals involved in the crime and to trace the movement of other stolen vehicles. The suspects will be formally charged to court once the investigation is concluded.
This arrest underscores the growing effectiveness of coordinated police operations and the use of intelligence in combating trans-state criminal activities in Nigeria. It also highlights the commitment of the Ondo State Police Command to ensuring public safety and reducing the incidence of vehicle theft, a persistent challenge in many parts of the country. The successful recovery of the stolen car and the apprehension of the suspects send a strong message to would-be criminals that law enforcement is vigilant and capable. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to unveil more details about the network and its operations.
