Security operatives in Sokoto State have arrested three suspected bandits and recovered weapons in Tangaza Local Government Area, following intelligence about a planned attack. The arrests took place on April 29 at around 10 am along the Tangaza–Gidan Madi road. The suspects, identified as Aliyu Bello, 30; Dahiru Umar, 25; and Bashar Isah, 29, are all residents of Kwazari village in Kware Local Government Area. Security sources confirmed the operation was conducted after credible intelligence indicated an imminent attack on the community.
The three men were apprehended while riding a motorcycle, and during a search, security forces discovered they were part of a criminal group involved in kidnapping and extorting levies from local communities. The recovered items included a locally made AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition, two Dane guns, two 32g cartridges, and several charms used for spiritual protection. These weapons were concealed inside a sack placed within another bag to evade detection during routine checks.
According to sources who spoke to Zagazola Makama, a security expert in the North-East region, the suspects’ involvement in violent crimes has been linked to multiple incidents of abduction and forced payments in the area. Their arrest is seen as a significant step in curbing the rising insecurity in Sokoto State, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to banditry. The weapons recovered are now being analyzed to determine their origin and usage patterns.
Investigations are ongoing to trace other members of the group and uncover any planned attacks. Security officials are also working to strengthen surveillance along key routes in Tangaza and surrounding areas to prevent further criminal activities. The operation reflects coordinated efforts between intelligence units and field operatives to respond swiftly to threats.
This arrest comes amid increasing concerns over insecurity in North-West Nigeria, where bandit groups have frequently targeted villages, disrupting lives and economies. The recovery of weapons and the detention of suspects send a strong message to other criminals that security forces are actively pursuing them. Authorities are urging communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to prevent future attacks.
The incident underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations in combating banditry. As security forces continue their efforts, residents are hopeful that such actions will lead to lasting peace and stability in the region.
