Seven Killed in Fresh Attack on Benue Border Community

At least seven people have been killed in a violent attack on Channel One, a border settlement in Ukemberagya/Tswarev Council Ward of Logo Local Government Area, Benue State, on the night of Saturday, April 26, 2026, with the assault continuing into early Monday, April 27, 2026. The incident, confirmed by local leaders and the LGA chairman, has sparked widespread fear among residents, prompting mass relocation to safer villages. The attackers, believed to be suspected Fulani marauders, struck in large numbers, armed with firearms and riding motorcycles, according to eyewitness accounts.

Elder Joseph Anawa, a community leader, disclosed the details to journalists in Makurdi, stating that the attack occurred around 13:00 hours on April 27, 2026. He named six of the victims: Mr. Akor Gwakyaa, Mr. Msooter Gwakyaa, Aondoungwa Michael, Vershima Michael, Terna Michael, and Msughter Terzungwe, with a seventh victim’s name not yet released. Seven other residents sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals in Anyiin town. The attackers are suspected to be based at Shaor, a deserted village in Logo LGA, which intelligence reports have previously identified as a marauders’ camp.

Anawa emphasized that residents of Channel One and nearby communities are fleeing to safer areas due to the escalating threat. He called on government authorities to take immediate and decisive action to prevent further attacks. He urged the intensification of border clearance operations to dismantle suspected camps in abandoned villages like Shaor. He also recommended the formation of joint inter-state security task forces involving Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States to monitor cross-border movements and block routes used by attackers.

The Chairman of Logo LGA, Clement Kav, confirmed the attack, stating that seven people were killed and four others injured. He noted that the attackers typically strike at night and quickly retreat to their hideouts. Kav said he has already briefed the Commissioner of Police and the Adviser on Homeland Security about the incident. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had not yet received official details of the attack.

The recurring nature of these attacks, often linked to camps in deserted settlements and cross-border movements, underscores the urgent need for coordinated and sustained security intervention. Without swift action, residents in Logo LGA and surrounding areas may continue to live in fear, with their lives and livelihoods under constant threat.
