Terrorist Attack in Kano Community Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

Suspected gunmen attacked Rogo Local Government Area in Kano State on Thursday night, leaving one person dead and several others injured, prompting immediate security reinforcements and heightened vigilance across the region. The violent incident took place around 9:00 p.m. in Barbaji village, located in Jajaye Ward, where four armed men on motorcycles, dressed in khaki, stormed the community. Their target was a local vigilante member identified as Alasan Yellow, whom they shot at close range in front of his shop.

The attack triggered widespread panic among residents, many of whom fled their homes in fear. In the chaos, another individual who tried to intervene was also shot. The assailants then moved to a nearby vigilante office, where they opened fire indiscriminately, further escalating the danger and forcing more people to seek safety. The violence left the community in shock and disrupted normal life in the area.

Alhaji Haruna Barhaya, Commander of the Rogo vigilante group, confirmed the incident during a briefing with local authorities. He reported that one person died at the scene, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity. According to Barhaya, four victims are currently receiving medical treatment, and one of them, in critical condition, was referred to a hospital in Gwarzo for advanced care. He praised the swift response by local security personnel, who helped prevent further casualties during the attack.

In the aftermath, vigilante members worked alongside security operatives to evacuate the injured to nearby medical facilities. Authorities have since deployed a joint patrol team made up of personnel from neighbouring Kiru Local Government Area and parts of Kaduna State to strengthen security in Rogo. The presence of these additional forces is aimed at deterring further attacks and restoring calm to the community.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate fully with security agencies as investigations continue. Authorities are actively working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The incident has raised concerns about rising insecurity in northern Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where vigilante groups often serve as first responders to threats.

This attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing Kano State and highlights the need for coordinated efforts between local vigilante units and formal security forces. As investigations unfold, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim and preventing similar incidents in the future.
