A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, Hon. Gafar Oyebade, has been hospitalised following alleged assault by Hon. Olafisoye Akinmoyede, a member of the House of Representatives representing Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, April 20, 2026, at the APC State Secretariat in Oke Ado, Ibadan, during a meeting called to resolve internal party disputes over the recently held local government congress. Oyebade, who claims he was invited by APC State Secretary Hon. Fatai Adesina, alleges that he was violently attacked and threatened by Akinmoyede and his associates during the meeting.
In a statement released to DAILY POST, Oyebade detailed the events leading to his injuries. He said he arrived at the secretariat and was greeted by Akinmoyede, along with Fatai Awoyoola and Wale Bello. He stated that he refused to sit down without the presence of his party leaders, prompting the state chairman to summon them into his office. According to Oyebade, the meeting quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, during which he was beaten and harassed in the presence of state executives. He claimed Akinmoyede threatened to kill him, accusing him of attempting to take over the party. Oyebade confirmed that he has reported the matter to the Iyaganku State CID and is currently receiving medical treatment.
On the other hand, Hon. Akinmoyede has denied any assault took place during the meeting. In a statement issued through his Legislative Aide, Dr. Isiaq Akintunde, he maintained that the gathering was peaceful and aimed at resolving a dispute over Oyebade’s official party position. Akinmoyede pointed out that records show Oyebade served as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Lagelu Local Government APC, not the secretary as he claimed. He emphasized that there was no physical altercation and that the meeting was conducted in a professional manner to address the leadership confusion within the party.
The incident has sparked tension within the APC in Oyo State, raising concerns about internal party conflicts and the safety of party members. The Iyaganku State CID is now investigating the allegations, and the outcome may influence the party’s internal dynamics in the lead-up to upcoming elections. As both sides present conflicting accounts, the public awaits official findings to determine the truth behind the alleged assault. This case underscores the need for peaceful resolution of political disagreements within Nigeria’s political parties.
