Millwalls Azeez and Bromleys Sowunmi Named in EFL Championship and League Two Teams of the Season

Two Nigerian players have been recognised in the EFL Team of the Season, with Millwall winger Femi Azeez named in the Championship Best XI and Bromley centre-back Omar Sowunmi included in the League Two Team of the Season, according to allnigeriasoccer.com. The honours were announced at the EFL Awards ceremony held in London on Sunday evening, highlighting the growing influence of Nigerian talent across England’s lower leagues. Both players were also in contention for individual Player of the Season awards in their respective divisions but were edged out by competitors.

Azeez, who has been a key figure for Millwall this season, was shortlisted for the Championship Player of the Season award but lost to Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney. The 21-year-old winger made a significant impact with eight goals and eight assists in 32 Championship appearances, directly contributing to 16 goals. His consistent performances helped Millwall maintain a strong position in the league and earn recognition from EFL officials and fans alike.

Meanwhile, Sowunmi, playing for Bromley in League Two, was named in the Team of the Season after helping his side secure promotion to League One for the first time in the club’s history. The 25-year-old defender scored six goals and provided one assist in 38 matches, showcasing his versatility and leadership on the pitch. Despite being nominated for the League Two Player of the Season, he was beaten by Swindon Town’s Aaron Drinan.

Another Nigerian, Tom Iorpenda of Notts County, was also nominated for an individual award but missed out on the League Two Young Player of the Season title, which went to Walsall’s Daniel Kanu. The recognition of these players underscores the increasing presence and success of Nigerian footballers in the English Football League system.

This season’s achievements follow a strong tradition of Nigerian players excelling in the EFL. Ademola Lookman won the Championship Apprentice Award in 2016 while at Charlton Athletic, Deji Elerewe claimed the League One Apprentice Award in 2022, and Chuba Akpom was named Championship Player of the Season in 2023. These milestones reflect the depth of talent emerging from Nigeria and the opportunities available in England’s competitive football landscape.

As the EFL season draws to a close, the performances of Azeez, Sowunmi, and other Nigerian players continue to inspire young talents across Nigeria and beyond. Their success not only brings pride to their communities but also opens doors for future generations aiming to make their mark in European football.
