Three Die in Ogun State Road Accident

A tragic road accident along the Onipepeye axis of the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State has resulted in the deaths of three people and left seven others critically injured. The incident occurred on Saturday, around 5:40 PM, involving a Sino truck and an Opel salon car. According to the Ogun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, the collision was caused by speed violations and loss of vehicle control. Rescue teams from the FRSC arrived at the scene within seven minutes, reaching the location by 5:52 PM.

The accident involved a total of 10 individuals, including four adult males, three adult females, two female children, and one male child. Of these, seven sustained injuries — three adult males, three adult females, and one female child. Tragically, three lives were lost: two adult males and one female child. The injured victims were immediately transported to the State Hospital in Ijaye for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary for further procedures.

Corps Commander Ogunjobi emphasized that the crash was preventable and directly linked to reckless driving behaviors. He stressed the importance of adhering to speed limits and ensuring vehicles are mechanically sound before hitting the road. “This incident underscores the dangers of speeding and poor vehicle maintenance,” he said. “We urge all road users to drive responsibly and prioritize safety over time.”

The Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway is a major transportation corridor in southwestern Nigeria, frequently used by commercial and private vehicles. Despite ongoing efforts by the FRSC and other agencies to improve road safety, accidents remain common, often due to human error and poor vehicle conditions. The FRSC continues to intensify awareness campaigns and enforcement operations along high-risk routes.

This latest incident adds to the growing toll of road crashes in Nigeria, where traffic accidents claim thousands of lives annually. The Federal Road Safety Corps has reiterated its commitment to reducing fatalities through increased patrols, public education, and collaboration with other stakeholders. Motorists are being reminded to avoid distractions, maintain safe speeds, and conduct regular vehicle checks.

As investigations continue, the FRSC has called for the public to report any unsafe driving behaviors to help prevent future tragedies. The road safety agency remains vigilant in its mission to make Nigerian roads safer for all. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for collective responsibility in ensuring road safety across the country.
