A fatal road traffic crash in Kano State has claimed two lives and left 20 others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command. The incident occurred on Saturday morning at Wudil T-Junction along Maiduguri Road, involving a DAF trailer carrying animals, goods, and passengers. The crash happened at approximately 9:20 am as the vehicle was en route from Wudil Market to Lagos State. Preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicate that the driver lost control due to excessive speed while approaching the junction, leading to a collision.
A total of 30 adult males were involved in the crash. Of these, 20 sustained injuries of varying severity, eight were rescued without injuries, and two were confirmed dead at the scene. The FRSC rescue team arrived within 10 minutes of receiving a distress call at around 9:25 am, initiating immediate evacuation and rescue operations. The injured were swiftly transported to Wudil General Hospital for medical attention, while the wreckage was cleared to restore normal traffic flow in the area.
Sector Commander, Commandant Idris Mohammed Lawal, expressed deep concern over the recurring pattern of road crashes linked to reckless driving and unsafe transportation practices. He specifically highlighted the dangerous trend of carrying passengers in trailers designed for goods and livestock, which he described as a major threat to public safety. Lawal emphasized that over-speeding and overloading continue to be leading causes of road accidents in Nigeria, particularly in states like Kano where such violations are common.
He urged all drivers and transport operators to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and safety standards. Lawal also appealed to the general public to avoid boarding such unsafe vehicles, stressing that personal safety should never be compromised for convenience or cost. The FRSC Kano Sector Command reiterated its commitment to enforcing road safety measures and reducing fatalities across the state. The agency remains vigilant in its efforts to improve road safety through regular patrols, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of traffic laws.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by poor road safety practices in Nigeria. As authorities continue to investigate the crash, the FRSC is calling for greater cooperation from all road users to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
