Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Accuses Ex-Deputy Aminu Abdussalam of Impeachment Plot

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has revealed that his former deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, plotted to impeach him and seize power in the state, a claim he made during a public gathering at the Government House in Kano on Thursday. The governor addressed a group of traditional praise singers known as Mawallafan Abba Gida Gida, using the occasion to speak candidly about the political crisis that has unfolded within his administration. He described the actions of his former deputy as a deliberate and calculated attempt to remove him from office, despite having come into power together on the same political ticket.

Yusuf expressed surprise at the turn of events, emphasizing that there was no known conflict or offence that could justify such a move. He pointed out that he had not received or seen any official resignation letter from Abdussalam, raising questions about the legitimacy and motives behind the sudden departure. “Today, the deputy governor who came with us on the same ticket is no longer with us. Nobody offended him. In fact, I have not even seen his resignation letter,” the governor stated, underscoring his belief that the resignation was part of a larger political scheme.

He further asserted that the plot was thwarted by divine intervention, saying, “Whatever made him act that way was an attempt to remove me and take the position, but God did not allow it.” Yusuf also voiced disappointment over how the matter unfolded within the Kwankwasiyya political movement, questioning why Abdussalam was not given the opportunity he allegedly desired through legitimate means. He criticized the movement for promoting individuals who were once political enemies, calling it a betrayal of loyal members.

In response to critics who accused him of betrayal after his recent exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Yusuf defended his decisions, insisting they were made in the best interest of Kano’s people. He argued that the real betrayal is happening within the Kwankwasiyya camp, where former adversaries are being elevated over dedicated supporters. “Now, the person who was once our biggest enemy… is the one they are now putting forward. Is that not a betrayal?” he asked, challenging the integrity of the movement’s leadership.

Despite the political tension, Yusuf maintained that governance in Kano remains stable and uninterrupted. He confirmed that several qualified individuals have already expressed interest in the vacant deputy governor position and assured the public that the appointment process will be conducted fairly and transparently. The governor emphasized that the next deputy governor will be someone capable and committed to serving the people of Kano. As the state moves forward, Yusuf’s administration continues to focus on development and public service, signaling resilience in the face of internal political challenges.
