2027 Elections: Igbo Group Pledges to Back Only Credible Candidates

A political advocacy group from the Southeast, AlaIgbo Political Watchdog (APW), has announced its mission to reshape the region’s political landscape by promoting only credible candidates in the 2027 general elections. The group, led by spokesperson Prince Ben Ahanonu, aims to ensure that leadership in Igboland is rooted in integrity, transparency, and selflessness. It has launched a platform to evaluate and support aspirants across all political parties, emphasizing that the future of the region depends on electing leaders who prioritize public service over personal gain.

APW’s statement underscores the belief that AlaIgbo, as a cultural and historical identity, predates modern political parties. The group argues that no party can truly advance the region’s development unless its leaders are credible and committed to the people. “It is our conviction that AlaIgbo predates modern political parties,” Ahanonu stated. “Consequently, no political entity can significantly advance the region’s development unless leadership is rooted in credibility and selflessness.”

To achieve its goals, APW has opened applications for political aspirants to submit their vision and strategic plans. The group will conduct a rigorous internal review of all submissions before selecting the most qualified candidates for public endorsement. “We will support candidates who demonstrate a zeal for transparent public service, devoid of any pursuit of personal aggrandisement,” the statement read.

The watchdog also emphasized its commitment to supporting leaders with a proven track record of public service. These leaders must be accessible, present, and dedicated to sacrificial service, following the legacy of the late Sam Mbakwe, a revered figure in Southeast politics. APW stated it will champion candidates who reward excellence and hard work, rather than those who promote mediocrity or self-serving networks.

The group’s initiative is designed to counter the influence of political opportunists and ensure that only those with genuine commitment to the people’s welfare are elevated to power. “Come and pitch your vision and strategic roadmap,” Ahanonu urged. “Following a rigorous internal review, we will champion the best candidate to the voters.”

By focusing on character, competence, and public service, APW seeks to restore trust in the political process across Igboland. The group’s efforts could influence voter choices and set a new standard for political accountability in the region. As the 2027 elections approach, APW’s role may become a defining factor in shaping the future leadership of the Southeast.
