Super Eagles: NFF Confirms Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo In Line for Debut, Says Coach Eric Chelle

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is now eligible and set to make his debut for the Super Eagles at next month’s Unity Cup tournament. The former Arsenal shot-stopper recently completed his highly anticipated switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria, a move that received official FIFA approval this past Monday. This development marks a significant boost for the national team as they prepare to defend their title.

Okonkwo, who previously represented England at the U16, U17, and U18 levels, was reportedly very enthusiastic about the opportunity to play for Nigeria. An NFF official revealed that the player’s keen interest made the entire process of securing his switch much smoother for the football federation. The official also stated that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is very keen on including the in-form goalkeeper in his immediate plans for the upcoming matches.

The 24-year-old’s case for a national team call-up has been tremendously strengthened by his impressive performances throughout the season. Okonkwo has made a total of 42 appearances in all competitions for his club, managing to record 10 clean sheets in his 37 Championship matches. These stellar stats firmly place him among the top-performing goalkeepers in the entire division, making him a valuable new asset for the Nigerian squad.

The Super Eagles will commence their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The match is scheduled to take place at The Valley, the home ground of Charlton Athletic in England. Nigeria enters the competition as the defending champion, having won the previous edition after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Jamaica, which followed a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

With this major addition to the squad, fans are hopeful that Arthur Okonkwo’s presence will solidify the team’s defence and enhance their chances of securing another trophy for the nation. His integration into the team will be closely watched as the tournament approaches, signalling a new chapter for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department.
