Politics | APC Insists Nigeria’s Democracy Will Survive Without Opposition on Ballot

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reassured Nigerians that the nation’s democracy will remain stable even if some opposition parties fail to appear on future election ballots. The assurance, contained in a statement released on Tuesday by APC spokesman Seye Oladejo, was issued in response to complaints by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over alleged threats to its participation in upcoming elections. The APC maintained that democracy is governed by laws and institutional procedures, not by political pressure or alarmist claims.

The party emphasised that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) operates strictly within constitutional limits and that all political parties must comply with electoral regulations. Any party failing to meet these requirements will face the consequences, the APC said. The party also pointed to its own experience in 2019, when it was barred from participating in elections in Zamfara and Rivers states due to legal and procedural violations — a precedent it argued shows that electoral sanctions apply equally to all political entities, not just opposition parties.

Addressing the ADC’s allegations, the Lagos APC described the opposition party’s internal crisis as the result of disorganisation and procedural lapses that have undermined its credibility. The statement condemned the ADC’s attempt to blame the ruling party for its own self-inflicted challenges, describing it as “disingenuous.” The APC reiterated that failure to comply with electoral rules can lead to exclusion from the ballot, but that this does not threaten the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.

The party acknowledged that the ADC’s difficulties are internal and urged political actors to resolve their own issues rather than make public accusations. The APC also reaffirmed its commitment to credible elections and called on all stakeholders to work together to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process, stressing that stability would not be compromised by the absence of any single party on the ballot.

As Nigeria prepares for future elections, the APC’s position signals a continued focus on strict compliance with electoral laws and transparency as the foundation of a stable democratic framework. The party’s message was clear — while political challenges may arise, democracy in Nigeria will endure as long as established rules and institutions are upheld.
