The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State is grappling with internal leadership chaos following the holding of two parallel state congresses on Saturday, which resulted in the emergence of two competing factions, each claiming legitimacy. The congresses, held simultaneously at different venues, produced Emmanuel Famojuro and Femi Soluade as competing state chairmen, while Olumide Onabajo was named State Publicity Secretary by both groups. This development has intensified factional tensions within the party, raising concerns about unity and governance.
In a swift response, Olumide Onabajo issued a press statement on Sunday, clarifying his position amid the growing crisis. He expressed appreciation to both factions for acknowledging his role in enhancing the party’s visibility across Ogun State. However, he voiced disappointment over the lack of support from key stakeholders, particularly Hon. Ojerinde Olusola and Comrade Salau, despite his sustained efforts and personal sacrifices in the Ajuwon/Akute area of Ifo Local Government. Onabajo emphasized that his contributions have been made known to God and to those who have followed his journey.
After careful reflection and consultations, Onabajo announced his decision to align with the faction led by Emmanuel Famojuro. He stated that this move was driven by a desire to continue contributing meaningfully to the party’s stability and growth under a leadership he feels more aligned with. “At this critical juncture, it has become necessary for me to clearly state my position,” Onabajo said. He stressed that his decision was not made lightly but was based on conviction and the need to remain effective in his role.
Onabajo also noted that while he would refrain from delving into specific details, his commitment and sacrifices for the party are well-documented. He extended well-wishes to all parties involved, urging them to continue working towards strengthening democratic ideals in Nigeria. His statement comes at a time when the ADC is seeking to consolidate its position ahead of upcoming elections and political engagements.
The parallel congresses have not only split the party’s leadership but also raised questions about internal party democracy and decision-making processes. With two claimants to the state chairmanship and a key official choosing sides, the ADC in Ogun State now faces the challenge of reconciling its factions or risk further fragmentation. The situation underscores the need for clear party structures and conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent such crises in the future. As the party moves forward, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether unity can be restored or if the divisions deepen.
