The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the appointment of new national vice chairmen to represent the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, marking a significant step in the party’s efforts to expand its national footprint and ensure inclusive leadership. The decision was officially disclosed on Monday through a joint statement issued by the party’s national chairman, Cleopas Zuwoghe, and national secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu. The appointments are designed to strengthen representation across all regions and support the party’s growing political structure ahead of upcoming national events.
The NDC has assigned specific leaders to each of the country’s six zones: Mohammed Bakin Zuwo for the north-west, Danlami Arabs for the north-east, and Barnabas J. Ejisi for the north-central region. In the southern part of the country, Frederick E. Owotorufa will lead the south-south zone, Teddy Obey will represent the south-east, and Adedayo Ekong has been appointed for the south-west. These selections reflect the party’s commitment to regional balance and equitable participation in governance.
The party emphasized that these appointments are part of a broader strategy to deepen its presence across Nigeria and build a leadership framework that truly includes all Nigerians. The move is also directly linked to preparations for the NDC’s upcoming congresses and national convention, which are expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s future direction and policy agenda.
The NDC is a relatively new political entity, having been officially registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in February 2026. Just weeks after registration, on March 15, the party launched an online membership platform to encourage Nigerians to join and participate in its activities. This digital initiative underscores the party’s modern approach to political engagement and grassroots mobilization.
By appointing regional vice chairmen, the NDC aims to create a more decentralized and responsive leadership structure that can effectively address local concerns while aligning with national goals. The party’s leadership believes that this inclusive approach will enhance its credibility and broaden its appeal across diverse communities.
As the NDC continues to build its organizational capacity, these appointments signal a serious intent to become a major player in Nigeria’s political landscape. The party’s focus on regional representation and digital outreach positions it as a forward-thinking alternative in the country’s evolving electoral environment.
