Let Them Go To Nigeria: Gaye Slams Potential European Coach Hire For Black Stars 2026 World Cup Bid

Renowned African football analyst Mamadou Gaye has strongly advised the Ghana Football Association to steer clear of appointing a European coach for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, advocating instead for the selection of an experienced African manager for the Black Stars. His comments come as Ghana remains without a head coach just sixty-two days before the tournament begins, following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a series of poor results, including a recent 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in March.

Speaking on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa programme on Thursday, Gaye issued a stark warning against the potential hiring of a foreign coach, a move he believes would primarily benefit European managers rather than African football. He argued that such an appointment would be a significant error, stating that bringing a European coach to the World Cup would only serve to polish his CV before he eventually departs, leaving no lasting benefit for the continent. Several European names, including Hervé Renard, Felix Sanchez Bas, Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, and Fernando Santos, have been linked with the vacant position.

Gaye emphasised that qualified and experienced coaches are readily available within Africa itself. He suggested that if the GFA cannot find a suitable Ghanaian candidate, they should look to neighbouring footballing nations for talent. He specifically pointed to Nigeria, South Africa, and Ivory Coast as countries with a wealth of qualified African coaches who possess the necessary expertise to lead the national team. This approach, he believes, would be a more sustainable and beneficial solution for African football development.

Ghana has been drawn into Group L for the 2026 World Cup, where they will face formidable opponents in England, Panama, and Croatia. Their opening match is scheduled for June 17 against Panama. As the clock ticks down to their first game, the decision on who will lead the team carries immense weight for their campaign. The choice of coach will be critically important as the Black Stars prepare to compete on the world’s biggest football stage.
