The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State has rejected the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent derecognition of the party’s leadership, calling it a misinterpretation of a court order. Lawal Tukur-Batagarawa, the Katsina State Chairman of the ADC, made the statement on Sunday in Katsina, affirming that the party’s leadership remains valid at both state and national levels. He emphasized that the court had directed the maintenance of the status quo pending further hearings, warning that any action suggesting dissolution of the leadership is misleading and harmful to party unity.
Tukur-Batagarawa addressed concerns raised by a legal suit initiated by Nafi’u Bala, which has sparked confusion among party members and the public. He explained that the ongoing legal process does not justify INEC’s decision to derecognize the current leadership. “The court judgment clearly stated that the status quo should remain. Any action suggesting dissolution of the leadership creates unnecessary mischief and doubts,” he said, stressing that the interpretation by INEC is “wrong and mischievous.”
The ADC chairman confirmed that the party’s leadership will continue to manage its affairs as usual, especially as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. He disclosed that the party is already gearing up for congresses at various levels, with the national convention scheduled for April 18, 2026. The state chapter has begun mobilizing members and stakeholders to ensure active participation in these critical events.
Tukur-Batagarawa urged party members to remain calm and united, assuring them that the leadership crisis will be resolved through legal channels. He reiterated the party’s commitment to democratic processes and adherence to court rulings. The ADC leadership is preparing to challenge INEC’s decision in court to restore clarity and protect the party’s constitutional rights.
Despite the legal and administrative challenges, the ADC remains focused on its political objectives and organizational development. The party’s leadership is confident that the judiciary will provide the necessary guidance to resolve the dispute. As the 2027 elections draw closer, the ADC is determined to maintain its structure and continue engaging with Nigerians across the country. The resolution of this leadership issue will be crucial in shaping the party’s electoral strategy and public perception in the coming months.
