Enugu ADC Suspends Ward and State Congresses Over INEC Derecognition Crisis

The Enugu State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially suspended its scheduled ward, local government, and state congresses following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to derecognise the party’s national leadership. This major internal adjustment comes as the party responds to the directive issued by the electoral umpire regarding the status of the national executive committee headed by Senator David Mark.

Mrs. Stella Chukwuma, the Enugu State Chairperson of the ADC, confirmed this development during an interview with newsmen in Enugu on Thursday. She explained that the decision to put the congresses on hold is a direct response to the regulatory climate created by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to the state chairperson, the party must now await formal instructions from the national headquarters before proceeding with any internal electoral processes.

Despite the halt in congress activities, the party leadership remains committed to expanding its reach within the state. Mrs. Chukwuma clarified that essential party operations such as the mobilisation and registration of new members are currently proceeding without interruption. She noted that initiatives involving political realignment and coalition building also remain central to the party’s strategy in the region.

The regulatory action by INEC has significantly impacted the party’s administrative stability, as the electoral body has reportedly deleted all information related to correspondences from the embattled National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and the National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. Mrs. Chukwuma described the situation as critical, noting that the state chapter cannot move ahead with its planned congresses until the legal and administrative challenges at the national level are fully resolved.

Throughout these internal difficulties, the party leadership maintains a positive outlook regarding its growth trajectory in the state. Mrs. Chukwuma expressed satisfaction that the African Democratic Congress is steadily becoming a rallying point for various opposition elements across Enugu State. She remains optimistic that the current setback will not hinder the party’s long-term goal of building a stronger political structure.

The suspension of these democratic processes reflects the ongoing legal and regulatory scrutiny facing several political organisations in Nigeria as they prepare for future election cycles. The outcome of the national leadership dispute will likely determine how quickly the ADC can resume its internal administrative activities and stabilise its governance structure across all levels.
