The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, met with a former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, in a closed-door session on Monday. The meeting took place against the backdrop of ongoing political realignments in the state ahead of the 2027 elections. This comes after Governor Yusuf announced his decision to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and join the APC (All Progressives Congress). The move has drawn significant attention, as it comes amid leadership shifts in Kano’s political landscape.
Governor Yusuf’s transition to the APC sparked a discussion among former political allies, with Shekarau, a former governor of Kano, defending Yusuf’s right to join any political party. In a video posted on his approved WhatsApp platform, Shekarau emphasized that Yusuf’s decision to switch parties was not a betrayal. He also noted that Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and a prominent figure in Kano politics, had made a similar move in the past.
When explaining his decision to join the APC, Governor Yusuf argued that it was essential to strategically align the state with the federal government to enhance development. He made this statement at the 2026 Grand Rally, where thousands of APC supporters gathered to celebrate his entrance into the party. Speaking at the event held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Yusuf stressed that Kano’s political and economic significance demanded closer ties with the central government.
Meanwhile, another notable development in Kano’s political arena involved the former presidential candidate and leader of the NNPP, Kwankwaso, officially joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Last Monday, he received his membership card at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Bompai, Kano. The event was attended by other prominent political figures, including David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun. Kwankwaso’s defection further underscores the dynamic political environment in the state, as various stakeholders realign themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
As political realignments continue to unfold in Kano State, these developments highlight the evolving landscape of Nigerian politics. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the strategic shifts by prominent figures like Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso suggest a period of recalibration and repositioning within the political sphere. This will likely influence the course of regional and national politics in the coming months and years.
