Chief Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has declared he is not afraid to contest for the Abia State governorship in the 2027 general election, following a strong show of support from community leaders and constituents in his Bende Federal Constituency. At a meeting held on Tuesday, Kalu affirmed his readiness to consider the call to run, promising to make a formal decision soon. He emphasized that he would announce his final stance in Umuahia, the state capital, in accordance with Nigeria’s constitutional requirements for gubernatorial candidates.
Kalu, who is currently serving his second term in the National Assembly, described the overwhelming support from his people as “organic” and urged them to remain patient as he weighs his options. He was presented with a machete and traditional girdle by community elders during the gathering—a symbolic gesture representing readiness and blessing for leadership. “You have always done this symbolic preparation and given me the blessings of our elders and the spirit of our land,” Kalu said. “And every time I have gone with your blessing, I have always won.”
He reiterated his confidence, stating, “I am not afraid. I am prepared to listen to what you have said. I will come back with a decision soon.” The event drew prominent stakeholders, including Dr. Madukwe Ukaegbu, Abia Representative in the Public Complaints Commission, and Professor Hagler Okorie, who praised Kalu’s leadership qualities and effective representation. “Bende people are gathered here today because we are proud of you, because you have shown capacity in your representation and we know that you will do better as governor,” Ukaegbu said.
Support groups from various communities within the constituency displayed placards with messages urging Kalu to enter the gubernatorial race. The gathering underscored the deep political loyalty and high expectations from his constituents, who see him as a capable and credible candidate. His performance in the National Assembly, particularly his role as Deputy Speaker, has positioned him as a leading figure in Abia politics.
As the 2027 elections approach, Kalu’s potential entry into the gubernatorial race is expected to reshape the political landscape in Abia State. His decision will be closely watched by political analysts, party leaders, and voters across the state. With strong grassroots backing and a track record of electoral success, Kalu remains a formidable contender should he choose to run. The coming weeks will be crucial as he prepares to formally announce his political future.
